Ultimate Thanksgiving Movie List

Every year I hear the same question being asked, everyone wondering what movies would be good to watch for the Thanksgiving holiday.

You wouldn’t think it would be so hard to find great Thanksgiving movies to watch, especially considering that it is a big national holiday with a lot of history behind it; but trying to find good movies to watch for Thanksgiving can be a real challenge.

This year, I was so determined to find those great Thanksgiving films that I literally scoured the internet in search of movies that would be fitting and appropriate for the holidays.

So if you are wondering what would be good to watch for Thanksgiving, I think you will really enjoy this list!

Whether you are looking for fact or fiction, documentaries or dramas, comedy or romance . . . for every age group and style of interest, there is something here for everyone!


Please note that I cannot vouch for all of the movies listed here since, even though I have seen many of them, I have not seen ALL of these movies myself.





































Animated Films



The Story of Thanksgiving (as told by Plymouth Rock)

This is a really cute, 3-minute cartoon that tells about the first thanksgiving from the unique perspective of the rock, Plymouth Rock. Perfect for helping young children understand the basic history surrounding why we celebrate Thanksgiving today.

The Story of Thanksgiving . . . Basically

Here is another really short, but very cute YouTube video for kids. This one shows the contrast between the very first Thanksgiving and the way Thanksgiving is celebrated today.

The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn’t

This classic, made-for-television, animated special is a fictionalized telling of the first Thanksgiving celebration in America, told from the perspective of a Squirrel.

Davey and Goliath: The Pilgrim Boy

Davey is curious about the holiday of Thanksgiving, so his father reads him the story of the first Thanksgiving. The whole story is played out through Davey's imagination.

The story consists of the Pilgrims, who are at first cautious about the Indians. The Indians bring food to the Pilgrims and help them out by educating them on how to provide (the key word) for them to survive. The Pilgrims are so appreciative of their new friends that they celebrate by having a feast, a Thanksgiving feast.

Buttons & Rusty: The Turkey Caper

An old classic cartoon for Thanksgiving. The show is mostly just for fun, but it does have a section about the pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving.

Finger puppets act out this background story on the life of Squanto and how he came to be a hero in the Thanksgiving story.

Animated Hero Classics: William Bradford

William Bradford fled with the Pilgrims to the new world where he discovered that the price for religious freedom was hunger, sickness and death. As a peacemaker, he befriended the Native Americans who taught the struggling Pilgrims how to survive.

By the end of the first year, William Bradford became Governor of the new land. After their first critical harvest, he set aside time for the Pilgrims and their new Native American friends to feast together and express their thanks to God. Thus, William Bradford became the Father of Thanksgiving Day.

This short film is set in the pioneer days, not the pilgrims, and it doesn’t have any reference to Thanksgiving, but apples come in season in the fall making Johnny Appleseed a great character to study around this time of year. Plus, the song he is famous for, “The Lord is Good to Me” is a perfect song to sing for Thanksgiving!

Mayflower: The Pilgrim’s Adventure

Originally titled The Voyage of the Mayflower, this old classic film is not even available on DVD yet. Set in the 1620’s, the story begins with the religious persecution of the Puritans in England and their decision to emigrate to Plymouth Colony in America. This is a fairly sturdy and enjoyable piece of historical drama, with the most important details about who, what, where, and why informatively answered.

Plymouth Adventure

Another forgotten classic you can’t find on DVD! Spencer Tracy and Gene Tierney star in this Hollywood realization of life aboard the Mayflower on her most historic journey. Tracy is at his gruffest and bitterest as the disagreeable, tempestuous Captain Jones, master of the famous vessel that carried the Pilgrims to the New World. The depiction of the hardships faced by the passengers and crew on the voyage are fairly accurate, despite any minor liberties taken with historical facts.

Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale

A young warrior, abducted from his homeland and enslaved must battle impossible hazards on a desperate journey home. Driven by a passion to be free, he risks everything to escape his captors, braving the wilderness and triumphing, finally, as a great leader.

This movie is not fact based, but it is well done and can be a good way for kids to see the types of lives people in that age lived.

When the grandmother arrives, old wounds are opened but eventually healed. Based on a story by Louisa May Alcott.

Hallmark: A Family Thanksgiving

A classic Hallmark video in which a single, workaholic woman thinks she has everything she could ever want and has no time for family and holiday festivities. It Happened on 5th Avenue

A homeless hobo moves into a vacant mansion and along the way he gathers friends to live in the house with him. Without his knowing, the actual owners of the mansion come in disguise and take up lodging with him in their own home.

There is no mention of Thanksgiving in this movie, but the characters in the film have a lot to learn about what truly matters in life and how friendship and family are of greater value than money.

Holiday Inn

A classic musical that encompasses all the major US holidays, including a musical number for Thanksgiving.

The section on Thanksgiving is very short, but the entire film has a very “festive” feel to it, making it a holiday favorite!

Thanksgiving Promise


A teenage boy is torn between his love for an injured Canadian goose that he has found and his agreement to fatten and kill it for an approaching Thanksgiving dinner for his neighbors.

Friendship’s Field

An American girl befriends a Hispanic migrant boy who has come with his family to work in her father’s field.

There is no mention of Thanksgiving in this movie, but the struggle to maintain a friendship cross-culturally is not unlike the struggle the pilgrims may have had in befriending the Indians. This film is also set in the autumn months of harvest and has a strong focus on friendship, loyalty, and gratitude.

WWJD II: The Woodcarver

Matthew Stevenson is a troubled kid from a broken home. When he vandalizes the local church, Matthew has to repair the damage to the church to avoid criminal charges. While working at the church, he meets Ernest, an accomplished wood carver who created the intricate woodwork decoration that Matthew destroyed. Ernest has become something of a hermit, but reluctantly comes out of reclusion to help repair the church. Now Ernest and Matthew must work together to preserve the church's beautiful antiquity, and along the way, they also manage to restore their faith in God and in life.

The heart-warming and heartbreaking story of an immigrant family that settles in Baltimore, the tale is told through the eyes of the family’s patriarch and tells a story of the importance of family in good times and in bad. Much of the movie centers around Thanksgiving and its meaning, and will have your whole family in tears by the end.

Pollyanna (1960)

An orphan girl brings sunshine into the lives of everyone she meets. But her Aunt Polly is too concerned with appearances, propriety, and local politics to appreciate her effervescent niece. It isn't until the town almost loses their "Glad Girl" that Aunt Polly realizes the power of love and lightheartedness.

There is no mention of Thanksgiving in this movie, but Pollyanna’s optimistic view that there is always something to be glad about in any situation, and the emphasis this movie places on family values make it an appropriate movie to watch during Thanksgiving holiday.

Summer Magic

When a Boston family loses their fortune they decide to move to the country. A kind postal worker allows them to take up residency in a vacant estate home while the owner is absent.


There is no mention of Thanksgiving in this movie, but the focus on family and the fall festivities near the end of the movie make it an appropriate movie to watch during the Thanksgiving holiday.

At first glance this movie may not strike anyone as being a good Thanksgiving movie (after all, there is absolutely no reference to Thanksgiving in this film), but the whole movie is about a family reconnecting as the father (Peter Pan) comes to realize what is really important in life.

The Swiss Family Robinson

There is no reference to Thanksgiving made this this movie, but the whole movie is about staying close as a family and surviving in a new world!

Beautiful Dreamer

A pre-med student unknowingly falls in love with the prince of Denmark who is in disguise and trying to escape his royal responsibilities. It Could Happen to You

A police officer promises to share his lottery ticket with a waitress in lieu of a tip. If you appreciate and give to other people more than yourself, you will receive riches far beyond lottery winnings. Charlie and Yvonne find happiness giving their money away, but when they lose it all, they find love for each other.

I don’t think there is any mention of Thanksgiving in this movie, but it does have a lot to teach about gratitude.

The Ultimate Life

Both a prequel and a sequel to the movie "The Ultimate Gift". The main actor is different from the first movie, but the plot and story are still very well done. Jason Steven's is struggling in his never ending responsibilities as a billionaire and head of the Stevens Foundation. He looks for answers in his grandfather's journal which plunges into a dramatic back-story of Red Stevens, starting out when he was just an impoverished youth struggling to make a life for himself.

The Blind Side

Based on a true story, this movie shows us so many things we have to be thankful for, and with a lot of it being about football and even including a scene with Thanksgiving dinner, it’s the perfect movie to watch around Thanksgiving time.

Abel's Field

Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle has been put under enourmous pressure to support his younger sisters. When he gets into a fight at school he bonds with Abel, the school's groundskeeper, and Abel becomes an unlikely mentor for this troubled teen.

There is no mention of Thanksgiving in this movie, but with a focus football and a strong emphasis on family, it seems to be a very fitting movie for the holidays.
