Windowsill Greenhouse

Windowsill Greenhouse. There’s nothing quite like learning about plants and gardens as actually getting your hands dirty and growing some plants first hand. We used these windowsill greenhouse kits to grow a variety of different seedlings which we later transplanted into our backyard garden. The kids very much enjoyed every stage of the process and continue to be excited about watching their plants growing.

Instant Sandbox Garden

Instant Sandbox Garden. I love this garden pretend play idea from Happy Tot Shelf of basically taking fake flowers and using some toy gardening tools and “planting” them in a sandbox to make a little preschool garden. The best part about this activity is that the results are instant, when the kids are done they have a beautiful garden to show for all their work. This can be a huge boost for young kids especially, since REAL gardening can really test their patience with how long it takes to see the results.

The Gardening Book

The Gardening Book. This book is amazing! It is definitely like no other gardening book I’ve ever seen. Specifically geared towards kids, it has some really fun activities and projects to get kids really enjoying the world of gardening.

I primarily got this book with my daughter in mind, but when my son saw the “Lost World” activity with all sorts of toy cars, dinosaurs, and even a helicopter hidden in a miniature garden scene he was hooked!

The activities in this book have you painting rocks and flower pots, making garden scenes with accents and toys, making “grass people”, creating beautiful potted gifts, and even creating an “overgrown castle” like in Sleeping Beauty or Beauty and the Beast. This book really gets a child’s imagination going while at the same time teaching some really great stuff about seeds, plants, and flowers. I love that it even goes into some hands-on activities that teach kids about their five senses (sight, touch, taste, feel, and sound). There’s a lot of fun and learning packed into this book!

Growing Grass

Growing grass . . . nothing too special about that, right? Well, when you use a baking tray and fill it with miniature animals, all of a sudden growing grass becomes VERY exciting and LOTS of fun!

The Dandelion Seed

The Dandelion Seed. A beautiful story about the very last dandelion seed of the season. This story follows the seed through its wind-blown travels and through the different seasons as it germinates and grows. The story in the book is very simple, but it shares details that are so profound and highly educational for kids.

National Geographic Kids: Seed to Plant

Seed to Plant. Kids see plants, flowers, and trees around them every day. In this lively and educational reader, they'll learn how those plants grow. Kids will take this magical journey from seed pollination to plant growth, learning about what plants need to thrive and grow with the same careful text, brilliant photographs, and the fun approach National Geographic Readers are known for.

Because of an Acorn

Because of an Acorn. Because of an acorn a tree grows, a bird nests, a seed becomes a flower. Enchanting die-cuts illustrate the vital connections between the layers of an ecosystem in this magical book. Wander down the forest path to learn how every tree, flower, plant, and animal connect to one another in spiraling circles of life. An acorn can be just the beginning.

If You Plant a Seed

If You Plant a Seed. A resonant, gently humorous story about the power of even the smallest acts of kindness and the rewards of compassion and generosity. This book demonstrates not only the process of planting and growing for young children but also how a seed of kindness can bear sweet fruit

A Seed is Sleepy

A Seed is Sleepy. This is a beautiful book that teaches kids about the intricate, complex, and often surprising world of seeds. The book introduces children to a fascinating array of seed and plant facts, making it perfect reading material at home or in the classroom.

Hand Print Flower Craft

Hand Print Flower Craft. I don’t have a link for this project, since it’s just a picture I came across on Pinterest, but the craft is pretty easy to figure out just from looking at the picture. It’s basically just a combination of hand prints for the flower petals and foot prints for the stem and leaves. Make sure to use large sized poster paper, and then just cut it out once the paint has all dried.

Popsicle Stick Garden Picture

Popsicle Stick Garden Picture. I don’t have a link for this activity since it’s just a picture that I came across on Pinterest, but the idea is pretty simple. Basically you just take a sheet of construction paper and glue on popsicle sticks to form the fence posts. Cut and paste some construction paper flowers, grass, and a sun. And to top it off, you can use pom-poms (or even buttons would do nicely) for the center of the flowers and some green ribbon for the stems. A really neat art project to compliment the garden theme study!

Band-Aid Flower Picture

Band-Aid Flower Picture. I don’t have a link for this project, since it’s just an image I came across on Pinterest, but it was just too cute an idea to pass up. What kid doesn’t like Band-Aids!?! And when you stick them on a paper just right you can make a beautiful garden picture.

Nature Craft Heads

Nature Craft Heads. This free printable offers both a boy and a girl head with which kids can decorate with things they find in nature. Along these same lines, I also love the idea of making a rainbow picture out of different colored flowers that kids can collect from the garden. A great way to engage in art while enjoying the great outdoors and exploring what's going on in nature around us.

Peek-a-Boo Grass Garden Scene Craft

Peek-a-Boo Grass Garden Scene Craft. This is a fun little activity to do with kids. You basically just use green construction paper to make some thick grass and behind the grass you have little pictures that are then “hiding” behind the grass.

For the images behind the grass I put together this simple printable with pictures of things you could expect to see in a garden.

Carnation Color Changing Science Experiment

Carnation Color Changing Science Experiment. One of my favorite science experiments! Watch a white carnation flower literally changing color as it drinks up colored water through its stem. This is a great way to teach kids about how plants draw up nutrients through their roots and stems to feed the flowers.

If you’d like to do something a little more advanced you might consider also trying out this Rainbow Rose activity.

Seed Packet Matching Game

Seed Packet Matching Game. Your basic Memory matching game, only it’s made out of different seed packets that have been cut and laminated. A great way to recycle your seed packets and also engage in a game of memory that familiarizes your child with the basic garden plants and vegetables.

Yucky Worms

Yucky Worms. Who would want to be friends with a wiggly, slimy worm? You can’t even tell which end is which! But there’s more to these lowly creatures than meets the eye. Kids are invited to find out where worms live, see how they move, and understand why gardeners consider them friends with the help of this humorous and informative look at an unappreciated, and fascinating, creature.
