On Eagle’s Wings . . .

Up on a mountain we sat, my dear grandpa and I

We watched the sun rising spreading light to all below

We watched the world rejoicing in its bright and shiny glow

The birds they started singing, the wind began to blow,

And in the wonder of it all there were things I wanted to know

I turned to look at grandpa, as he watched the changing sky

And I asked him a question, the simple question, "why?"

Why does the sun come up each day, does it ever feel tired?

And when there's sadness or despair, does the world even then rejoice?

How about the birds, do they ever lose their song?

And does the breeze in all its days ever cease to blow?

"Do you see that bird?" he asked, "The splendid one in flight"

I looked, and there an eagle flew, it soared with grace and might

"When life below seems difficult, when sorrows weigh him down

He spreads forth his wings, and he lifts to the sky

His worries leave him, the pain is gone, the heaviness is light

For here he is near the creator, for he's got eagles wings”

I watched the bird as it dipped and soared, few it's cares must be

And I felt that it was cruel of God not to give us eagles wings

Grandpa must have known my thoughts, for he answered my silent question

He said, "Son, when life on earth is hard, every time we lose our song,

There's a way to find the strength we need, like the eagle in full flight.”

I wondered at the words he said, I could not find it's meaning.

Then grandpa looked down at me his eyes were kind and wise

He took me in his arms, that moment I'll never forget

I learned the greatest lesson, when he held me close and said:

"When we cannot take another step, when we feel there is no hope

That is when the Lord stoops down, and carries us on eagles wings"
